A few weeks ago I watched a South Korean drama with the name "The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince".
I was deeply impressed with those various fragrant coffee after watching this drama. I do dream
of being an excellent barista one day because I think a cup of fragrant coffee will bring people with
energy and hope. Most of us drink coffee everyday, but few of us know much about coffee itself.

Coffee is a widely consumed stimulant beverage prepared from roasted seeds, commonly
called beans, of the coffee plant. Coffee was first consumed in the 9th century, when it was
discovered in the highlands of Ethiopia. From there, it spread to Egypt and Yemen, and
by the 15th century had reached Persia, Turkey, and northern Africa. From the Muslim world,
coffee spread to Italy, then to the rest of Europe and the Americas. Today, coffee is one of
the most popular beverages worldwide.

Today, I'd like to say someting about the relationship between coffee and health.

Scientific studies have examined the relationship between coffee consumption and an array
of medical conditions. Most studies are contradictory as to whether coffee has any specific
health benefits, and results are similarly conflicting regarding negative effects of coffee
consumption.

Coffee appears to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart
disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. Some health effects are
due to the caffeine content of coffee, as the benefits are only observed in those who drink
caffeinated coffee, while others appear to be due to other components. For example, the
antioxidants in coffee prevent free radicals from causing cell damage.

Coffee's negative health effects are mostly due to its caffeine content. Research suggests
that drinking caffeinated coffee can cause a temporary increase in the stiffening of arterial
walls. Excess coffee consumption may lead to a magnesium deficiency or hypomagnesaemia,
and may be a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Some studies suggest that it may have
a mixed effect on short-term memory, by improving it when the information to be recalled is
related to the current train of thought, but making it more difficult to recall unrelated information.
Nevertheless, the mainstream view of medical experts is that drinking three 8-ounce
(236 ml) cups of coffee per day (considered average or moderate consumption) does not
have significant health risks for adults.

A few days ago I read a newspaper article about the value of life. It recounts such a story:
In order to escape the burden of life, a young and beautiful female academician would marry
a man who is out at the elbows rather than struggle for a better life. Unfortunately, she finally
died just because that her husband couldn't afford for the expensive operation fees. It is believed
that all the people who read this article will feel sorry for this girl's death. In the mean time,
her untimely death also cause us to think deeply the value of life.

Maybe the girl has never thought that she would end up being dead. However, she died just
because she had no courage to face pressures of daily living. I remember that the famous
novelist Milan Kundera has ever said such words in his book 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being':
"being" is full of "unbearable lightness" because each of us has only one life to live: "Einmal
ist keinmal" ("once is nonce", i.e., "what happened once might as well have never happened
at all"). Therefore, each life is ultimately insignificant; every decision ultimately does not matter.
Since decisions do not matter, they are "light": they do not tie us down. But at the same time,
the insignificance of our decisions - our lives, or being - is unbearable. Hence, "the unbearable
lightness of being".

Supposing that a man lives in the world without any pressure, his life would become dull.
There would be no meaning to his life. Heavy life is not always a bad thing, vice versa.
Do not spend much time or energy analyzing whether your life is heavy or easy. Facing the
pressures of daily life is the best way to create the value of life.

Dec 7 is a memorable day in history. On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941,
United States Pacific Fleet base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Empire of
Japan's Imperial Japanese Navy. This event made the United States enter World War II.
Two aerial attack waves, totalling 350 aircraft, were launched from six aircraft carriers with
the intent to destroy the United States Pacific Fleet.

The attack wrecked two U.S. Navy battleships, one minelayer, and two destroyers beyond
repair, and destroyed 188 aircraft; personnel losses were 2,333 killed and 1,139 wounded.
Damaged warships included three cruisers, a destroyer, and six battleships (one deliberately
grounded, later refloated and repaired; two sunk at their berths, later raised, repaired, and
restored to Fleet service late in the war). Vital fuel storage, shipyards, and submarine facilities
were not hit. Japanese losses were minimal, at 29 aircraft and five midget submarines,
with 65 servicemen killed or wounded.

The intent of the strike was to protect Imperial Japan's advance into Malaya and the Dutch
East Indies – for their natural resources such as oil and rubber – by neutralizing the U.S.
Pacific Fleet. Both the U.S. and Japan had long-standing contingency plans for war in the
Pacific, continuously updated as tension between the two countries steadily increased
during the 1930s. Japan's expansion into Manchuria and French Indochina were greeted
with steadily increasing levels of embargoes and sanctions by the United States and others.
In 1940, under the Export Control Act, the U.S. halted shipments of airplanes, parts, machine
tools, and aviation gas, which Japan saw as an unfriendly act. Nevertheless, the U.S. continued
to export oil to Japan, in part because it was understood in Washington cutting off oil exports
would be an extreme step, given Japanese dependence on US oil exports, likely to be
taken as a provocation by Japan. In the summer of 1941, after Japanese expansion into
French Indochina, the U.S. ceased oil exports to Japan, in part because American restrictions
on internal oil use were beginning. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had earlier moved the
Pacific Fleet to Hawaii and ordered a buildup in the Philippines, hoping to deter Japanese
aggression in the Far East. The Japanese high command was (mistakenly) certain an attack
on the United Kingdom's colonies would inevitably bring the U.S. into the war, so a pre-emptive
strike appeared to be the only way Japan could avoid U.S. interference in the Pacific.

The attack was one of the most important engagements of World War II. Occurring as it did
before a formal declaration of war, it pushed U.S. public opinion from isolationism to an acceptance
war was unavoidable, as Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 "… a date which will live in infamy."

High-fat, high-carb meals more harmful to obese

Eating a high-fat, high-carb fast food meal produces damaging cellular changes that are greater and longer-lasting in obese people than in normal-weight people, a new study shows.

Dr. Paresh Dandona and colleagues from Kaleida Health in Buffalo, New York looked at inflammation and oxidative stress, which occurs when levels of normal byproducts of metabolism known as free radicals exceed the body's ability to neutralize them.

In previous research they found that obese individuals have higher levels of oxidative stress and inflammation than normal-weight individuals. They also demonstrated that eating a high-fat, high-carb meal increased oxidative stress and inflammation in normal-weight people.

To test whether these increases might be greater in obese people, Dandona and his team had 10 normal-weight and 8 obese people eat a 1,800-calorie meal consisting of a large hamburger, a large serving of fries, a large cola, and a slice of apple pie.

Both groups showed increases in oxidative stress two hours after eating the meal. By three hours, oxidative stress had returned to baseline levels in the normal-weight individuals, but it continued to climb in the obese individuals. The same pattern was seen for inflammation.

"If obese people who already have oxidative and inflammatory stress take the same meal, they get far greater and more prolonged levels of oxidative and inflammatory stress," Dandona told Reuters Health. "Since oxidative and inflammatory stress predispose you to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart attack and stroke, this risk is far greater in obese people."

In another study, Dandona and his colleagues demonstrated that a high-fruit, high-fiber meal with the same calorie content as the fast food meal tested in the current study produced no increase in oxidative or inflammatory stress.

The findings provide yet more evidence that people should avoid high-fat, high carb fast food meals and consume as much fruit and vegetables as possible, Dandona said.

Why Sleep Is Important
Your brain needs sleep because it exercises the parts of the brain you don't normally use. Your body needs that downtime to repair and refresh its systems. When people don't sleep for three or more days, they sometimes become psychotic.

Also, lack of sleep is associated with mental decline and overeating, which lead to major aging conditions. It's important because sleep is the single most effective way to increase the amount of growth hormone in your body and growth hormone is what makes us look young.

People who sleep less than six hours a night increase their risk of viral illnesses by 50 percent. They also have an increased risk of heart disease and strokes.

Fast Fact: You'll die sooner of sleep deprivation than of food deprivation.

How Much Sleep You Need

On average men need more sleep. Studies show women need seven hours of sleep each night, while men need seven and a half hours.

Babies need more and older people need less. But those numbers are on average. As you get older, you sleep less because your melatonin level plummets. Melatonin, evolved for us to sense light and dark, as well as changes in the season. It is higher at night and during the winter, which is why cultures that have longer winters sleep more.

But this is a hormone that peaks at age five, the declines 80 percent by age 60. So you'll sleep much less.

Basic Steps To Fall Asleep

First, you have to prepare for sleep. Figure out when you want to get up, and count backwards 7 hours. Then take a 15-minute period before that to start your slowdown process. So that's five minutes finishing up last-minute chores; five minutes of hygiene stuff, like brushing your teeth; and five more minutes to relax into sleep.

Fast Fact: If you've been lying there for 15 minutes and can't fall asleep, don't toss and turn. Get up and do some light activity that will get your mind of trying to sleep, such as a yoga pose, meditation, or a short walk.

Get Ready For Sleep

What should you do about allergies and congestions that keep you awake?

Weekend Sleeping Patterns
Get up at the regular time on weekends, plus or minus an hour. Have a standard wakeup time for every day of the week. If you wake up at 6 am Monday through Friday, then sleep until 10am on the weekends, you're giving yourself the equivalent of jet lag.

Have a quick nap later in the day, no longer than 30 minutes. Any longer than that and you go into stage three or four sleep, but not REM sleep. It's a zone that'll leave you groggy and disoriented when you wake up.

Create a Sleep Friendly Environment
You need a cool, dark room because that's what the body likes in order to sleep. That means no distractions in the bedroom like laptops, or televisions. The light is a stimulant and keeps you from falling into sleep. You also should sleep in non-restrictive clothing.

If you're in a loud area, you should consider a white noise machine, which blocks other noises without interfering with sleep.

People also underestimate the importance of a mattress. You should test drive yours at least 15 minutes, checking for comfort, support and heat. Some mattresses trap heat. If you feel hot on the mattress then it's not the right one for you.

of Great Danes. It really isn't much different with any other breed, though, because each breed
has its own particular health idiosyncrasies. I'm not even going to bring up the expense of
building, equipping, heating and lighting a kennel, nor property and liability insurance costs,
property taxes, zoning approval and depreciation and repairs!

1.) Your Great Dane needs to be registered through OFA-Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.
These x-rays show the hip joints and associated bony components and any deviations from
normal. If your dog doesn’t pass, don’t breed. This registry can not be done until the Dane is
2 years old (when the growth period is complete), so if you have a puppy, use this time to visit
the show or obedience ring and put some titles on. The OFA procedure requires deep sedation
or light anesthesia to execute properly and may cost you in the neighborhood of $150.00.
Another procedure, called the PENN HIP procedure is also used to evaluate the hips. This is
a fairly new method of showing any laxity of the hips, the dog should score high and well above
the medium.

2.) CERF- this is the registry of eye quality; a Board Certified Veterinary Specialist in Ophthalmology
must examine the eyes for any hereditary defects. Costs approximately $30.00 per year and
does have to be updated. (The specialist will charge you for the exam, too.)

3.) Cardiac- The heart evaluation needs to be run by a Board Certified Cardiologist usually at
a University and needs to be updated yearly also. Costs approximately $100.00

4.) Thyroid Function- This blood test can be done through your local veterinary hospital and is
a one-time evaluation... Costs approximately $50.00 to $80.00.

5.) DNA and Microchip are very important. These need to be registered through AKC (The
American Kennel Club) and are a must if you plan on using Artificial Insemination. DNA profile
and Microchip expenses vary greatly.

6.) Brucellosis- This test needs to be run prior to each breeding. It will show if the male or female
are carriers of this sexually transmitted disease. Costs approximately $40.00 to $80.00.

7.) Finally, take your dog to the veterinarian for any vaccinations and a preventative worming
before your dog is to be bred. Of course, male dogs can't transmit intestinal parasites or viral
diseases to the pups like the dam might. But his health is vitally important nonetheless.

which is without a doubt, the most famous of Korean cuisine. Kimch'i is a condiment that
is served with every meal. Information, literature, materials, and equipment related to
kimch'i from ancient times to the present is preserved and exhibited at the Myongga
Kimch'i Museum.

Kimch'i is a traditional fermented vegetable dish which is the most basic side dish at
every Korean meal. The fermentation of the different vegetables used, complemented by
salted fish and other seasonings, gives it a unique flavour. Kimch'i can be preserved for
a long time and was originally put in a clay pot and buried in the fall to allow it to ferment
for use throughout the winter months. Its hot and spicey taste is said to stimulate the
appetite. It is a nutritious dish, providing vitamins, lactic acid and minerals, otherwise
lacking in the winter diet.

PULGOGI
Pulgogi is very thin strips of beef marinated in soy sauce, garlic, onions, sugar, and black
pepper. You can cook this dish yourself at your table using a gas fired grill (sort of like a
barbeque) To eat it, you take a lettuce leaf, and onto the leaf you put a small amount of
meat, rice, vegatables, some sesame leaf, etc. This is then folded up and popped into

PIBIMBAP (rice with vegetables)
Pibimbap is made by adding vegetables that have been seasoned and stir fried to rice and
red pepper sauce. Typically bean sprouts are added and it is often served with a bowl of
bean sprout soup on the side. Each area of Korea includes its own local products in its
pibimbap, making each one unique. Tolsot (stone pot) pibimbap is served sizzling hot in
a stone pot that keeps the rice and vegetables warm all the while you are eating.
